We weren’t sure quite what to expect on arrival in Nairobi. The basic aircraft hanger doubling as the customs hall was surprising, since Nairobi is used regularly for global conferences. Our journey to the hotel passed the only set of traffic lights in the capital, and they weren’t working! However, our hotel was up to the usual international standards and we settled in, ready for our first round of golf the next day. Our transport for our time in Kenya was in Land cruisers that not only took us to golf but also throughout the Mara on our game drives! There is poverty in Kenya, which is evident on every journey, but then you enter your hotel, shopping mall or the golf courses and you immediately are transported to an international standard environment where everything is as you would expect. Caddies were supplied on most of the golf courses we played, which helped us to play the courses with some understanding. We were based in Nairobi for the first five nights, where three rounds of golf were played, along with visits to the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum. We then drove down to Lake Naivasha on our way to the Great Rift Valley, where we saw a number of Hippo families in the lake as we cruised by in our boat. Our lodge at the Great Rift Valley was at the golf resort, so we played this course and then made our way down to the Masai Mara for a three day safari. The safari lodge was based within the National Park and every morning & evening we went out on game drives. Prides of lions were seen on every excursion, along with elephant, giraffe, a few Rinos and a group of Cheetahs. Game drives are a magnificent experience and you never know what you will see around the next corner.
Our next stop was Mombasa, which was a small plane flight from an airstrip within the Mara National Park, which flew us within sight of Mt Kilimanjaro as we made our way to the coast. Once in Mombasa, we settled into our oceanside resort before playing two rounds at the LPGA Baobab course. This course has resident Zebras, Eland and Giraffes that wander the fairways. Quite an experience. Then a flight back to Nairobi for the flights back home. See an array of pictures we took during our time in Kenya here.
